SERMON: Living a Life of Purpose: Discovering God's Plan By Pst. Joseph Ondu
Living a Life of Purpose: Discovering God's Plan
"There is no such thing as a great life without a great purpose." Charles Spurgeon
Many people long for a sense of meaning and purpose in life, but as Christians, we know that God has a specific plan for each of us. Jeremiah 29:11 reassures us, "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." This powerful reminder shows that our lives are not accidents but are part of God's intentional design. Our purpose begins by understanding that God has uniquely created each of us with a divine calling.
Our identity in Christ is central to living with purpose. Ephesians 2:10 declares, "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand." Each of us has been equipped with talents, passions, and opportunities as part of God’s plan. By embracing our identity in Christ, we can confidently walk in the good works He has prepared for us, fulfilling the purpose He has placed on our lives.
To live a purposeful life, we must also seek God’s will through prayer and His Word. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to "Trust in the Lord with all your heart... and He will make straight your paths." Relying on God's wisdom, rather than our understanding, helps us stay aligned with His plans. Prayer and meditation on Scripture enable us to receive guidance and direction, ensuring that we are walking in step with God’s will for our lives.
Serving others is another key aspect of living purposefully. Jesus commands us in Matthew 22:39 to "Love your neighbor as yourself." Our purpose extends beyond our own fulfillment to include reflecting Christ’s love through acts of service and compassion. By serving others, we embody Christ’s love, making an impact in their lives while fulfilling our calling as His representatives.
Finally, living with purpose means persevering through challenges and glorifying God in all that we do. James 1:2-4 teaches us that trials produce steadfastness, shaping our character and deepening our faith. When we face difficulties, they are opportunities for growth and for trusting God more fully. Colossians 3:17 reminds us that everything we do should glorify God. By honoring God in all areas of life—whether in work, relationships, or challenges—we fulfill our ultimate purpose, which is to bring glory to Him.
Practical Approaches to Living Purposefully

2. Discovering Our Spiritual Gifts and Calling: Use your spiritual gifts to serve others (1 Peter 4:10-11).
Positive Thinking: "God has gifted me for a special purpose in His kingdom."
3. Embracing Opportunities to Serve Others: Actively look for ways to serve others in love (Galatians 5:13).
Positive Thinking: "I am called to make a meaningful impact by serving others."
4. Trusting in God’s Timing and Sovereignty - Trust God’s timing even during uncertainty (Ecclesiastes 3:1).
Positive Thinking: "God is working all things together for my good and His glory."
5. Walking in Obedience and Faithfulness - Serve the Lord wholeheartedly in all areas of life (Colossians 3:23-24).
Positive Thinking: "I will work faithfully for God’s glory, knowing that He will reward me."
Prayer Declaration:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the unique plan and purpose You have for my life. Help me to understand my identity in Christ and to walk in the good works You have prepared for me. Guide me as I seek Your will through prayer and Scripture and give me the strength to persevere through challenges. May I serve others with love and reflect Christ in all I do. Let my life bring You glory and fulfill the purpose You have set before me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
